Gadgets You Don’t Need (But Really Want)

I just read an article on the Popular Mechanics website that made me wish I had fifty thousand dollars lying around. The article focuses on five high tech gadgets that certainly will make your life easier but aren’t truly necessary.

The one that I am lusting after the most (which will tell you more about me than I ever wanted you to know) is the “self-cleaning” toilet. This toilet is two thousand dollars, has a heated seat, and a quite flushing engine. A toilet with an engine! The part about this toilet that I really love is that it cleans itself. It uses air deodorizer, bowl cleaner, and even an aerated water spray. Imagine never having to clean the toilet because it cleans itself!

The fifty thousand dollar mattress with anti-snoring technology (it has a vibration detection system built in that will prompt the mattress to adjust your position to open your nasal passages) is something other people in my house would probably like me to have. I think though, that I would be more likely to wake up as the mattress is moving me around than I would be to get a quiet night’s sleep.

The only thing I will be able to afford on the list is the twenty-two dollar toothbrush. This brush has 3,080 bristles and a handle that changes colors as it gets older (it turns red when it needs to be replaced). It also has a built-in timer to let you know how long you’ve spent on your teeth. While this is certainly nice, I could get the same effect with a regular electric toothbrush, a watch, and a calendar.

I am kind of in love with the self-cleaning toilet, though. $2000 to never have to clean the toilet again? Sign me up!
