I’m what you might call an alpha-geek. I geek out on multiple levels. Technology and comic books are my areas of high geekdom, which is a fairly common pairing.
And so to my brothers-in-geekiness I offer a review of a gem you may have missed: Comixology. If you’re not familiar with Coxmixology, it is an iPod app that allows you to download perfectly legal copies of comic books. In the early going, Comixology primarily featured small, independent press comics. But now the big guns are on board. Over time they have added more and more Marvel comics, and DC Comics has recently joined the Comixology fold.
The app itself is a free download from the App Store. There are many free comics available for download, including a fair number from the big companies. The comics that are for sale are typically half the price of their printed-on-dead-trees counterparts.
When I first downloaded Comixology, I found a number of the books had glitches that detracted from the reading experience. With time, the developer has ironed out the bugs and the comics really translate well to the size and shape of the iPod Touch screen. Downloads are fast and user-friendly.
I really have no complaints about the app itself. The software works well, the downloads are organized and fast, and the image resolution is terrific. I just wish more current comics were available electronically. I’d much rather pay $1.99 for a digital copy of this month’s issue of Kevin Smith’s Green Hornet (which would have made a much better movie than the Seth Rogen version hitting theaters later this year) than pay $3.99 for the printed variety.
Comixology is well worth the download for even the casual comic reader because the wide and frequently updated selection of free books means you can always have something new on hand to read while waiting at the doctor’s office or trying to look busy at work.

I wonder if this is an app available for the droid as well.
Nope. As of now, Comixology is only for iPod, iPhone, and iPad. You can check out their non-mobile, online offerings at http://www.comixology.com, though.
